Biography of George E. Countryman, M. D.

George E. Countryman, M.D., was a respected physician and surgeon in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was born on July 31, 1865, in Hastings, Minnesota, to Peter F. and Elizabeth (Gleason) Countryman, who were of Holland Dutch and English ancestry, respectively. Dr. Countryman, a descendant of Baron Johana Von Konderman, completed high school in Hastings and continued his studies at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Missouri Medical University in 1888 and began practicing in Mellette, South Dakota. He moved to Aberdeen in 1894, where he built a significant practice. He served as coroner of Brown County for eight years and as librarian of the Alexander Mitchell Free Library for five years. A member of the South Dakota State Medical Society, he was active in the Masons and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. On November 15, 1888, he married Kate A. Van Auken. They had a daughter, Marguerite, born August 27, 1890.

Biography of John D. Herman

John D. Herman, M.D., was a respected physician and surgeon who practiced in Conde, Spink County. Born on February 27, 1859, in Freeborn County, Minnesota, he was the son of German immigrants Philip and Augusta Herman. Dr. Herman studied at Ohio Medical College, graduating in 1886, and furthered his education in Chicago and Philadelphia. Relocating to South Dakota in 1883, he became Conde’s first physician and opened its initial drug store. Married to Anna Cowan in 1888, they had four children. Dr. Herman was also known for his public service and extensive farming operations in the area.

Biography of William W. Rounds

William W. Rounds, born on June 1, 1857, in Monkton, Addison County, Vermont, was the youngest of six children. Leaving home at age twelve, he worked various jobs before moving to Chicago in 1877 and then to Spink County, South Dakota, in 1882. There, he initially took up a pre-emption claim, later establishing a homestead in what became Conde. Biography of John P. Wolf

John P. Wolf, born December 9, 1854, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was a notable pioneer of Spink County, South Dakota. He was the son of Henry G. and Margaret F. Wolf, with his father serving as justice of the peace and clerk of courts in Gettysburg. John initially worked in paper manufacturing in Pennsylvania, then farmed in Minnesota before homesteading in Spink County in 1881. Wolf held various public offices, including deputy county auditor and treasurer, and managed a real estate business. He was active in several fraternal organizations, including the Masonic order and the Knights of Pythias.

Biography of Ambrose B. Robinson

Ambrose B. Robinson, born on July 18, 1857, in Broome County, New York, is the mayor of Frankfort, Spink County, South Dakota. Son of Edward and Eunice Robinson, he moved with his family to Iowa in the early 1860s and later to Wisconsin. Robinson engaged in lumbering before relocating to Frankfort in 1885, where he achieved success in various business ventures. A dedicated Republican, he was elected mayor in 1902. Robinson is a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. He married Alma Jane Ellis on March 27, 1881, and they have five children: Bessie M., Grace D., Clark A., Clare, and Zedna.

Biography of Hon. Nicholas T. Lowthian

Hon. Nicholas T. Lowthian, a distinguished pioneer of Grant County, played a vital role in the industrial and civic development of the state. Born in Ontario in 1840, Lowthian overcame early tragedy and embraced a life of service. After military service in the Civil War, he established himself as a successful farmer in Minnesota before settling in South Dakota. A devoted Republican, Lowthian held various public offices and contributed significantly to education. Married to Susan Beighley, he raised three children while also adopting two more. Now retired in Milbank, Lowthian remains connected to his farming interests and enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a respected figure in his community.

Biography of George D. Stelle

George D. Stelle, one of the prominent and popular farmers and pioneers of Spink County, is one of the brave “boys in blue” who went forth in defense of the Union when its integrity was in jeopardy through the armed rebellion of the Confederacy. He was born in New York City on the 8th of April, 1843, and is a son of Jeremiah D. Stelle, who was likewise born in that city. George enlisted in the Twenty-eighth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry in August 1862 and served in various battles, including Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. After the war, he pursued farming in different states before settling in South Dakota in 1881. He married Adelaide Calhoon, and they had eight children: Florence Lillian (deceased), William Earl, Jennie Weltha, Ruth Elizabeth, Agnes Opal, Vena E., Blanche, and Margaret E.

Biography of Alfred Goldin

Alfred Goldin, a prominent figure in Spink County’s agricultural community, has achieved great success through his own efforts in developing the region’s resources. Born in North Carolina in 1866, he overcame family hardships caused by the Civil War and limited educational opportunities. In 1886, he arrived in South Dakota with no capital, but his determination and hard work paid off. As a farmer, he thrived, eventually purchasing an 800-acre farm. With his land well-improved and cultivated, Goldin’s prosperity grew over the years. Known as a practical and progressive businessperson, he enjoys the respect and admiration of his community.
